BiographyThe father of Jane Ann ("Jane Annie") McKenzie (1844-1894) built the first of the grist and sawmills that gave her birthplace its name of Millfield, Megantic County, Quebec. The McKenzies also seem to have resided in nearby Inverness Township. After a local education, Jane received her diploma in 1864, became a teacher, and in 1870, married George Arkley (1842-1927). She subsequently lived in her husband's home town of Leeds, Quebec where her three children were born. They returned to Millfield in the early 1880s, then moved to East Angus in 1890. Nearly two decades after Jane's death, her poems were published as A BOOK OF VERSE (1912).
Other notesAccording to 1871 Census of Canada, daughter Louisa was born in the United States. Son Lorne became a Professor of Mechanical Engineering and settled in Pennsylvania, but still published a book in Canada on residential fuel efficiency.
