Biography | Minnie Louisa Hunter (1869-1963) was born in the small community of Cambray, Ontario, to a British-born carpenter and wife. Her childhood was spent in different parts of North Victoria county, including Fenelon Falls, where William Hunter (1828-1922) and Jane Ellen Leech (1833-) remained until their deaths. Some time during the years leading up to her 1899 marriage to optometrist George Thomas Gilpin (1874-1952), Louisa moved to British Columbia's west coast. As "Lois A. Hunter Gilpin," she was known as both an artist and a writer. She belonged to the Canadian Authors Association, Pacific North West Academy of Arts, the Vancouver Sketch Club and the British Columbia Art League, and had a one-person show at the Vancouver Art Gallery. Her two collections of verse were privately published in Vancouver, her home for most of her life. Lois Gilpin had no children. She was widowed in 1953 and died a decade later, in 1963. |
