Biography | Born and raised in Ottawa Mary Stewart Durie (1875-1911) seems to have resided for some time with her grandparents after her mother's death, even though her father soon remarried. By 1891, she had returned to her father's household. Educated at local schools in Ottawa and at Madame Amaron's French Boarding School in Berthier-en-haut, Quebec, she completed her nursing training at the Rhode Island Homeopathic Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island. A long-time resident of Ottawa, Mary contributed poems and stories to various periodicals. After a lifelong struggle with endocarditis (inflammation of the lining of the heart), she died in 1911, only four years after her marriage to James Goodwin Gibson (1875-1949). Her grieving husband selected the contents of STORIES AND VERSES (1913), most of which had been written before their marriage, and they were published with an introduction by Mrs. E.W. Thomson. |
