BiographyLed by schoolteacher father James Alexander Davidson (c1807-1867), Mary Ann Davidson (1839-1919) and her family left Scotland for Ontario in 1857. In Hamilton she married photographer George Forbes Maitland (1835-1928), with whom she raised six children. Though she had done little writing before she came to Canada, she began contributing to periodicals shortly after her arrival—an activity that continued for nearly sixty years and resulted in two published volumes, AUTUMN LEAVES (1907) and GOD SPEED THE TRUE: A LITTLE VOLUME OF CHEERFUL CANADIAN VERSE (1919). She also wrote a number of hymns that were set to music. Mary died in 1919 and was buried in Avondale Cemetery.
Other notesSon George Herrie Maitland wrote THE BOY WHO LIES OUT YONDER (1918), and was editor of the Toronto Star. Daughter Minnie and her own children also became photographers.
