BiographyBorn in Bath, Harriett (or Harriet) Annie Wilkins (1829-1888) emigrated to Hamilton with her family around 1846. Her father's death shortly thereafter, combined with the ill health of her mother, left her in charge of her younger siblings. With one of her sisters Harriett conducted a seminary, carrying on alone after that sister left to get married. Harriett also taught music, first at the school and later from her home. On top of these other duties, she was also well known for her ministrations to the sick, the poor, and the imprisoned. A regular contributor to the "Poet's Corner" of the HAMILTON SPECTATOR AND JOURNAL OF COMMERCE, she published four of her volumes of verse at the SPECTATOR office.
