CUPW [Canadian Union of Postal Workers] support rally, Queen Elizabeth Theatre Hall
Description
Photograph shows CUPW secretary Leroy Hiltz speaking to B.C. Federation of Labour support rally for CUPW at Queen Elizabeth Theatre Hall. The rally marked the one-year anniversary of the passage of the 1978 legislation that removed postal workers' right to strike. The action also coincided with the Supreme Court of Canada appeal by CUPW president Jean-Claude Parrot who had been sentenced in May to three months in jail and 18 months probation for refusing to order members to return to work as required under Bill C-8, the legislation that ordered CUPW back to work. The appeal was denied and Parrot was jailed for two months in 1980 for his defiance of Bill C-8.
