[Jennifer Silver]:My name is Jennifer Silver and I'm a faculty in the Department of Geography at the University of Guelph.

00:00:05.522 --> 00:00:17.365
[Jennifer Silver]:So I've been invited to be a part of the Herring School because I've done research in different places in BC about First Nations and their rights and access to fisheries resources.

00:00:17.345 --> 00:00:30.387
[Jennifer Silver]:And so it's been really exciting to be up here in Balabella because of course the Gladstone case is a really historic and important Supreme Court decision about the rights that First Nations should have and do have to fisheries resources in their territories.

00:00:31.308 --> 00:00:35.235
[Jennifer Silver]:And so it's been great to get to work with the ecologists and archaeologists.

00:00:35.215 --> 00:00:49.141
[Jennifer Silver]:to try and think about what we're finding about hearing both present and in the past, how that might inform management plans but also make a strong case for why HELTSUK should have more involvement in hearing management.

00:00:49.882 --> 00:00:52.647
[Jennifer Silver]:We do our research in lots of different ways.

00:00:52.747 --> 00:00:57.055
[Jennifer Silver]:One of the most important sources of data for us is interviews with people.

00:00:57.035 --> 00:01:16.326
[Jennifer Silver]:We like to talk about recollections and memories and stories that they might have about how herring was used in the past, the different values that different people have for herring, whether it's for food or for ceremony or just for the relationships that they have with one another when they're trading and when they're eating or even when they're talking about herring.

00:01:16.306 --> 00:01:35.867
[Jennifer Silver]:We are also interested in government policies and just the general ways that people from government or from industry talk about herring and trying to understand the reasons why that they've made decisions around management that they have and piecing together policy documents and commentaries and press releases and that kind of thing helps us to understand that a bit better.
