Badami: Cave 1

Description: Early (Western) Chalukya. Relief panel of Shiva as Lord of the Dance (Nataraja) shown with 18 arms & accompanied by his bull mount Nandi, dancing Ganesha & drummer. Carved out of the south rock cliff near the Malaprabha River at Badami (ancient Vatapi), the capital of the early Chalukya dynasty that ruled most of the Deccan from ca. A.D. 543 to 642 (phase 1) and from ca. A.D. 654 to 757 (phase 2). Cave 1, the lowest.
