CFU demonstration to protest the grower’s withdrawal from negotiations. Driediger Farms negotiated with the Canadian Farmworkers Union for well over two months. Terms of the collective agreement between the Union and the employer were finalized on April 13, 1980. The grower backed out at the last minute saying he is a ‘Free Enterpriser’ and doesn't believe in unions. CFU demands include Minimum of $4.00 per hour, and Minimum of $3.00 per flat (for a 16 lb. flat).

March and Rally against Archaic Labour Contract System

On Saturday, July 12, 1980, the CFU marches against the labour contract system. Buses left from New Westminster IWA Hall early. The Clearbrook, BC march began in the morning and rallied at noon. Many workers came out of the fields to join the 200 demonstrators.

Farmworkers are not usually hired directly by the grower, rather they are hired by a middle-man who contracts with the growers to supply them with labour. The July 12, 1980 Clearbrook, BC march began in the morning and rallied at noon. Many workers came out of the fields to join the 200 demonstrators.

Three young boys, Sumandeep, Gurjeet, and Boota, drowned in a gravel pit while their parents were picking berries in a nearby field.

Three young boys, Sumandeep, Gurjeet, and Boota, aged seven to eleven drowned in a gravel pit in Langley, BC, while their parents were picking berries in a nearby field. The Crown charged the Municipality of Langley and the Motorcycle Association which leased the land with three counts of manslaughter.” A CFU lawyer launched a civil suit on behalf of the family. The Motorcycle Association was found guilty, the family sued for damages and was awarded $30,000. Charges were dropped against the Municipality of Langley.”

The first CFU election lost and a very close certification vote. Issues for the CFU in the lost vote included the inclusion of non-farmworkers like long distance drivers voting. Also, Dec.1, 1980 letter from CFU staff to CFU members at Forssell announcing a 'cooling-off' period after CFU lost certification vote.
