Show moreBARE YOUR BREASTS in support of Gwen Jacob!/ MARCH for SHIRTLESS EQUALITY/ SUNDAY, JULY 18, 1993/ Meet in front of the Vancouver Art Gallery, 750 Hornby St., by the fountain at 12 NOON and join us in our march to City Hall!/ GWEN JACOB On July 18, 1991, Gwen Jacob of Guelph, Ontario, went for a walk without wearing a shirt, as did many other Canadians on that hot day. To our knowledge, she as the only one arrested. The reason given was that, as a female, her breasts were considered indecent. We know of no males who were told this about their breasts. We have organized this march to show that discrimination on the basis of gender is unacceptable and that no part of anyone's body is indecent. Please join us to show your support./ THIS IS NOT AGAINST THE LAW! The Criminal Code does not specify that breast exposure is banned; it merely outlaws being "so clad as to offend against public decency or order". This is open to interpretation, and all indications are that, with rare exceptions, police will not challenge shirtless women. During shirtless protests all over the country last July, in only one case (Waterloo, Ontario) were any arrests made. The Waterloo police later said that because all the other police forces in the country had declined to do so, they were no longer going to make any arrests for breast-bearing in the future. All of the women charged in Waterloo were acquitted of the indecency charges./ Everyone welcome (women and men). Those participating in the march are asked to remove their shirts to show support./ RAIN OR SHINE/ RECYCLED PAPER
