In March of 1988 the Gitksans set up their first roadblock on logging roads near their home of Kispiox, British Columbia. A year ago on International Human Rights' Day, December 10, 1988, 21 Penans were arrested for blockading timber roads at Long Late, 'Apoh, Baram in Sarawak, Malaysia. Just before the blockades went up again in September of this year, 80 native representatives signed a joint statement. "We ask for help from people all over the world. We are people with a proud culture and a way of life that is built in our forest and land.
