The sculpture, paid for by the Soviet Peace Committee and Society Rodina, was in tribute to the Russian novelist who used the proceeds from the sale of his novel Resurrection to finance the Doukhobors emigration to Canada in 1899, allowing them to escape persecution for their pacifist views.
