On-to-Ottawa Trek concert, Ukrainian Hall, Vancouver - Brenda Baird on left.
Musical and narrative production celebrates the 1935 On to Ottawa Trek, at Vancouver's Ukrainian Hall, 805 East Pender. Event was a fundraiser to put the production on video. The 1935 Trek saw thousands of unemployed workers head for Ottawa to demand 'Work and Wages' from the Depression-era Conservative government of R.B. Bennett. A rally of the trekkers was violently broken up by police in Regina. On stage are former trekkers Ray Wainwright and Bob Jackson, flanking Jean Evans Shiels, daughter of the Trek's legendary leader, Arthur "Slim" Evans. Musicians include labour singer Tom Hawken, with Sheila Allan, Mike Allan and Doren Allan. Not pictured are musicians Brenda Baird and Steve Gidora.
Vancouver teachers picket
Vancouver Teachers Federation pickets during strike over class sizes as the main issue. In those days individual teachers associations bargained separately with their school districts. Local bargaining was later removed and replaced with a province-wide system by the NDP government, and the Liberals in 2002 removed the right to bargain working issues such as class sizes. At this writing (February 2015) the issue was still before the courts, which had previously twice ruled the right was improperly taken from teachers.
