CUPW [Canadian Union of Postal Workers] pickets at Vancouver main post office
-
Postal workers picket outside Canada Post's main depot in Vancouver during a strike against privatization measures and the use of low-wage workers at the crown corporation. Violence from private security firms marred the strike, as did the use of scab labour. The union warned of the increased use of superboxes in new housing developments as a threat to home delivery, prescient warnings given the Harper government's installation of community mailboxes starting in 2014.

PSAC [Public Service Alliance of Canada] "return to work" rally, Vancouver Art Gallery
-
Members of the Public Service Alliance of Canada rally outside Vancouver Art Gallery after returning to work following a return to negotiations. The PSAC strike targeted cutbacks to the federal civil service ranks and increased use of contracted workers, part of the Conservative government's plans to privatize public services. The government had back to work legislation poised but were reluctant to use it. The public service staff relations board had found the government bargained in bad faith for its refusal to negotiate wages and impose its zero wage increase for the first year of a three year contract.
