Community rally (Grandview Park) in support of Skyway [Luggage] strikers

Description: Local residents and unionists take part in community rally organized by B.C. Federation of Labour in support of striking Skyway Luggage workers on strike for 10 weeks and facing contempt of court charges for picketing plant in defiance of injunctions. The workers eventually signed an agreement in August, after their union local amalgamated with the Teamsters. The company closed the Vancouver manufacturing plant permanently in December.

May Day rally, Vancouver Technical School auditorium
Year: 1982
Description: MLA Pauline Jewett (centre) addresses May Day rally. In the 1970s and 1980s May Day rallies were a major affair with speeches by both NDP and Communist Party representatives. May Day events were later to involve a series of events throughout the month under the banner, Mayworks. In the 1990s May Day events waned, the likely victim of the decline of left forces following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1992.

Hospital workers vs. Bill 82-Robson Square

Description: Members of the Hospital Employees Union and the BC Nurses Union protest outside a health and safety conference in Vancouver sponsored by Vancouver General Hospital and the health employers association. Protest targeted Bill 82, the Compensation Fairness Act, for considering health and safety improvements as "costs" and thereby covered by the wage control legislation.
