The collection embodies SpokenWeb’s spirit of critical scholarly engagement in its range and depth, further supporting SpokenWeb’s mission of sustainable access in bringing together several recording technologies and an array of sonic artifacts. The SpokenWeb Audio Collection also serves as complement and companion to many of the fonds and print volumes in SFU Special Collections’ Contemporary Literature Collection (CLC).

The SpokenWeb audio collections include recordings found in the fonds of Pierre Coupey, Adeena Karasick, Lisa Robertson and Sharon Thesen, as well as recordings from The Capilano Review. Coupey’s fonds supplement the materials collected under The Capilano Review, the magazine he founded in 1972 at Capilano College, and together these include readings by Victor Coleman, Maxine Gadd, and John Newlove, class visits from Margaret Atwood as well as Michael Ondaatje with Daphne Marlatt, and interviews with Richard Prince, bpNichol, and Sheila Watson. Thesen’s fonds primarily contain tapes from an interview with Frances Boldereff (Phipps) and Karasick’s consist of many of her own readings from the late 80s and early 90s, complements to the recordings and discussions with her mentor Warren Tallman that are present in his collection.

Also included are literary readings and panel discussions held by SFU Archives, dating from 1968 to the early 1980s, with readings by Frank Davey, Mavis Gallant, Irving Layton, Dorothy Livesay, P.K. Page, and F.R. Scott among others.

Additionally, the collection includes recordings made at the inaugural SpokenWeb Institute, held at Simon Fraser University in May 2019.
