Biographical or Historical Note
Archibald Lampman was born near Morpeth, Ontario, November 17, 1861. One of Canada's most important 19th century poets, he was particularly influenced by English Romanticism, and by the work of the North American Transcendentalists, while holding socialist political views. Married to Maud Playter in 1887, their union produced one daughter and one son although his domestic life was ultimately to prove unsatisfying. His working years were passed in the civil service as a Post Office clerk in Ottawa, his free time time spent as much as possible in the open air, often in the company of his good friend Duncan Campbell Scott. Lampman's life was shortened by a severe attack of rheumatic fever as a child which left him with a permanently weakened heart. He died of pneumonia, February 9, 1899.

Some items in the archive were originally in the possession of Lampman's fellow poet and good friend, Duncan Campbell Scott, who gave them to Natalie Lampman MacInnes thirty years after Lampman's death.
