Biographical or Historical Note
Born and raised in Nanaimo, B.C., Anne Cameron began writing stories at an early age. She won her first award in 1971 from an Alberta Poetry Competition. In 1972, her ""Windigo"" won the B.C. Centennial Playwriting Competition. Her ""Dreamspeaker"" won the Canada Film Award for best original screenplay of 1976 and was published as a novela in 1978. (She had written several screen stage, and radio plays earlier in the decade, and more followed ). In the last 15 years she has published a book of poems, five collections of short stories, five chapbooks of West Coast aboriginal tales and six novels. Her ""Daughters of Copper Woman"" (1981), now in its 18th printing, is read from Australia to Great Britain in English, and has been translated into German and Dutch; her 1988 novel, ""Child of her people,"" has been translated into Norwegian. Her reputation and readership is international, which is attested to by both the translations and the correspondence from her readers.
