Biographical or Historical Note
Barrie Phillip Nichol was born in Vancouver, B.C. 30 September 1944. He was a poet and language artist, editor and publisher. Nichol was involved with the Four Horsemen (a sound poetry performance group), as an associate editor of Open Letter, with severa l different presses including Coach House, Underwhich Editions, and with his own press, Ganglia, during the 1960's and 1970's. During those years he initiated projects with many experimental poets and visual artists. He was also active in the therapeutic community, Therafields, for a number of years. Nichol was married in 1980 to Eleanor Hiebert. They have one daughter, Sarah Kathryn, born in 1981. Barrie Nichol died in September, 1988 after surgery.
