Ratan Kaur Thauli was married in India at the age of 16 in 1912. Her husband came to India a second time in 1912 and returned back to Canada in 1914. For 11 years she lived in India with her relatives. When permission was given to bring wives and unmarried children under the age of 18 years she came to Canada. She came in 1924 but started her journey in 1923 as she had to stay in Hong Kong for 3 months because she was diagnosed with trachoma [an infectious eye disease] during her medical test in Hong Kong. She got treatment for the trachoma. Many people failed the medical test and some were send back to India. She traveled with people from nearby villages: Tara Singh, Thakur Singh and Bhagwan Singh and his son. She had 700 rupees in her pocket. She went back to India only one time in 1968.
The route was from Phagwara [in Punjab] to Calcutta, Hong Kong and Vancouver. She stayed one week in the Gurdwara [temple] in Calcutta. The ship she came on was a cargo ship. It stayed one day at Rangoon and Singapore and took 7 days to get to Hong Kong. People fell sick on the ship. Many Chinese, Japanese and white people were on board. The first time the Japanese women saw her they were afraid of her. The Gurdwara at Hong Kong was where people stayed while they were en route. There were arrangements for room and board there. There were many Indians living in Hong Kong to work in the police and army.
From Hong Kong she came to Vancouver with another couple. The ship went via Shanghai, Nagasaki, and Kokoi to Vancouver. Passengers were counted on the way. She landed in Indian clothes. Four ships were in operation. Every 15 days a ship was available for the journey. Her husband received the information from the others from their village that his wife had to stay in Hong Kong for treatment of trachoma; he went there to take care of her. But before he came she took the ship to Canada, so they didn’t meet in Hong Kong. When she arrived in Vancouver she lived in the Gurdwara on 2nd Avenue until her husband came.
Her husband worked in a saw mill in Abbotsford for $3 a day. Most of the people working in the mill were single so they lived in cookhouses [a group living arrangement]. Their family lived in a mill house with 4 rooms. For 4 years she lived alone in Abbotsford. The first time she saw snow she thought it might be cotton. The Abbotsford Gurdwara was very close by. On gurpurabs [religious holidays] she would go to the Vancouver Gurdwara. In 1910 there started being trains from Chilliwack to Vancouver. Every half mile there was a train station. They left three times a day and it took three hours to reach Vancouver.
When the mill shut down there was no granthi [priest] at the Gurdwara. On the occasion of gurpurab people asked them to do seva [making food in the Gurdwara for the whole community]. Her family did free seva in the Gurdwara for 3 years. Their children went to school. In 1933 they leased a 100-acre farm in a partnership for $800. They bought cows on installment. The monthly installment was $32 and they had trouble making payments. They fed their cows just the grass and oats that grew in the fields. They had eight cows. She worked hard the whole day. Then they purchased farm in Sumas in 1948 and had 20 cows. At the onset of winter from November until the end of April cows were kept in the house. There was no electricity and water in the house. The Fraser Valley milk producer’s truck purchased milk from them. In the cities there were horse carts that sold the milk. Two weeks later they would get their earnings from selling their milk. At one point they started grading milk into 1%, 2%, etc. She herself did gardening and grew vegetables. Other Indian people also took farms on lease. Her children went to school wearing turbans but they did not learn Punjabi.
The owner of the farm sold his land so they had to leave and rented another 100-acre farm Chilliwack. They lived there four years. Then they rented a farm in Agassiz for $950 a year. They lived there 9 years. They took their cows from Chilliwack to Aggasiz on foot. In the mean time milk prices were increased and a union was formed so people’s earnings increased. During World War II she was in Aggasiz. Her elder son Gurbaksh Singh, who was born in 1924, got a letter to report for military duty. But East Indian people refused to join the armed forces since they did not have voting rights in Canada.
By that time she had 30 cows and they bought a 150-acre farm in Ladner in 1948. They also bought machines for milking. They had a truck by that time and brought the cows to Ladner in the truck. Her son attended school up to grade 12 but didn’t go further as he would have had to do physical training not wearing his turban. Her son drove trucks for delivering wood and also farmed. Her daughter also passed grade 12. His father told them to get their degrees no matter what.
No women worked outside the home. They used fuel wood in the house. In winter green vegetables were not available; they preserved green vegetables for the winter season. The marriage of her elder son was solemnized in 1950 in India. He went alone to India for the wedding. His uncle in India arranged the match. Her all children got married in India.
Ratan Kaut Thauli’s son Gyan Singh Thauli, who was born in 1928 in Canada, joined in the interview and talked about the Depression and his father’s struggle to earn a living in Canada. His father came to Canada in 1906. Before Gyan Singh’s birth his father was a preacher in the Gurdwara and worked in a saw mill. The mill burnt down and they had to move to Sumas and take a farm on partnership. Just 20-25 people worked in the Abbotsford mill. He went in school in Chilliwack. The Indian children played with Japanese children and could speak some Japanese.
There was no heating system in house. They used to boil water on the furnace. They lived for 9 years in Abbottsford. It was difficult to manage in winter. The whole family worked on the farm. They had no outside contact. The groceries were delivered to the house. There were two grocery stores nearby. When we fell sick he would stay in Vancouver at a relative’s house for a few days. Every Friday in the Vancouver Gurdwara the did akhand path [a continuous 48-hour recitation of the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy book] so on those days his father went to Vancouver. He moved from Chilliwack to Agassiz in 1939, moving the cows on foot. It took them a whole day. In Agassiz they rented a farm without electricity and water. There was no water supply at home. They had to fetch water from far away. To get ahead it was necessary to do a second job so his father and elder brother got jobs in 1943 in a saw mill at Harrison Hot Springs near Agassiz. In 1942 they bought a second-hand car for $1,300 on installments and his brother got a driver’s license. Everyone at home worked on the farm feeding the cows, milking the cows by hand and fetching water. The cooperative of Fraser Valley milk producers collected milk from the farmers.
While working in the mills their income increased. There was electricity on road but not in the house so they asked the landlord to run electricity to the farm. They dug an underground well and started getting water in-house. They purchased two bicycles to go to school. During the war everything was rationed. He graduated from high school in 1947. During summer he also worked in saw mill. The whole family’s earnings were pooled. Everyone was focused on working and earning money. They used to get an English newspaper at home and his job was to read stories about the war and know about the world. They didn’t have any social life except working on the farm. There were not many Indian girls and boys in Canada. In 1950 the Indian population grew. Nobody intended to stay in Canada. Their aim was to earn money and go back to India.
By 1948 the family had saved $26,000. They bought a truck for $5,000. In town Indian people were not allowed to purchase property but there was no problem purchasing farms. From Agassiz they purchased a farm in Ladner. In 1949 he got a job on Mitchell Island in the North Arm. He worked as a grader and trimmer in a saw mill for 13 years earning $1 an hour. This mill burned down, and then he got a job as a trimmer and worked there for 3 months. Indian people took a contract from the mill for 8 people and hired their own people. But the union broke that contract system. There was a two-month strike in the mills by the IWA [International Woodworkers of America].
In 1956 they expanded the farm. They got a permit to build a new house and the city ran water to the house. The house had central heating. They had a big milk business and earned lot of money. By that time all the work was done by machines. They bought their first new tractor in 1948. Every farm had at least one tractor. They started hiring high school kids for seasonal work. When he quit working at the mill, they expanded their farm to 225 acres, 140 cows, four tractors, 6 dump trucks, and full machinery in the farm. There was no moment of rest, no leisure time; the aim was to make money.
Successful Indian people were Kapoor and Mayo in the saw mill industry, Duman’s in trucking, Gyan Singh’s family in farming and dairy. Kabul Singh and Hardas Puria also had big potato farms.
His father was president of Gurdwara for many years. In 1953 for long time he was involved in Gurdwara affairs at the 11th Avenue Gurdwara.
In 1950 he cut his hair. His brother had problems playing sports because of the turban, so he decided to cut his hair. At that time every body wore black turbans in Canada. Only black cloth was available. Women went to Gurdwara in Western-style dresses covered with sheets [because Western dresses were not suitable in the Gurdwara]. All women wore Canadian dresses because they had to mix with this culture. He married in 1958. His wife came from India and was 17 years old at the time of marriage. They were married in the Gurdwara on 11th Avenue. Her wedding dress was a white gown with red chunni [scarf]. The granthi [priest of the Gurdwara just read the 4 lawan [marriage hymns], but they didn’t do the pheras [ceremonial circling of the holy text], they didn’t have a wedding picture, it was a very simple wedding. They celebrated their 25th anniversary with akhand path at the Gurdwara. The committee of the Gurdwara gave a silver tray to them on that occasion. In 1973 his whole family went to India.

Elle a voyagé de Hong Kong à Vancouver via Shanghai, Nagasaki et Kokoi avec un autre couple. On comptait les passagers pendant le voyage. Elle portait des vêtements indiens à son arrivée. Il y avait quatre bateaux. Tous les 15 jours, un bateau était prêt à faire le voyage. Des gens originaires du même village que Ratan ont informé son mari qu’elle devait rester à Hong Kong pendant son rétablissement du trachome, alors ils ne se sont pas vus à Hong Kong. Lorsqu’elle est arrivée à Vancouver, elle a habité au Gurdwara sur la 2e Avenue jusqu’à ce que son mari vienne la chercher.
Son mari travaillait à la scierie d’Abbotsford pour 3$ par jour. La plupart des gens travaillant dans la scierie étaient célibataires et habitaient dans les cuisines de chantier [logement communautaire]. Leur famille vivait dans une maison de quatre pièces sur le site de la scierie. Pendant 4 ans, elle a habité seule à Abbotsford. La première fois qu’elle a vu la neige, elle croyait que c’était du coton. Le Gurdwara d’Abbotsford était près de chez elle. Les jours de Gurpurab [fête religieuse], elle se rendait au Gurdwara de Vancouver. Des trains ont transporté des passagers de Chilliwack à Vancouver pour la première fois en 1910. Il y avait une gare tous les demi-mile. Il y avait trois trains par jour et il fallait trois heures pour se rendre à Vancouver.
Lorsque la scierie a fermé ses portes, il n’y avait pas de granthi [prêtre] au Gurdwara. On leur demandait de faire seva [préparer des repas au Gurdwara pour toute la communauté] pour le Gurpurab. Sa famille a préparé le seva gratuitement pendant 3 ans. Leurs enfants sont allés à l’école. En 1933, ils ont loué une ferme de 100 acres avec d’autres partenaires pour la somme de 800$. Ils ont acheté des vaches par paiements échelonnés de 32$ par mois et ils avaient de la difficulté à faire ces paiements. Les vaches ne mangeaient que de l’herbe et l’avoine qui poussait dans les champs. Ils avaient huit vaches. Ratan travaillait très fort toute la journée. Ensuite, ils ont acheté une ferme à Sumas en 1948 et ils avaient 20 vaches. Du début de l’hiver en novembre jusqu’à la fin avril, les vaches restaient dans la maison. Il n’y avait pas d’électricité, ni d’eau dans la maison. Le camion des producteurs de lait de la vallée du Fraser achetait leur lait. Dans les villes, il y avait des voitures tirées par des chevaux qui vendaient le lait. Ils étaient payés deux semaines après avoir donné leur lait au camion. À un moment donné, ils ont commencé à offrir du lait 1%, 2%, etc. Ratan jardinait et faisait pousser des légumes. D’autres Indiens ont loué des fermes. Ses enfants portaient des turbans pour aller à l’école, mais ils n’ont pas appris le Punjabi.
Le propriétaire de la ferme a vendu la terre, alors ils ont dû quitter et louer une autre ferme de 100 acres à Chilliwack, où ils ont habité pendant quatre ans. Ils ont ensuite loué une ferme à Agassiz pour 950$ par année, pendant 9 ans. Ils ont amené leurs vaches de Chilliwack à Agassiz à pied. Entre temps, le prix du lait a augmenté et on a formé un syndicat pour augmenter les salaires. Ratan habitait à Agassiz pendant la deuxième guerre mondiale. Son fils aîné, Gurbaksh Singh, né en 1924, a reçu une lettre lui annonçant qu’il devait se joindre à l’armée. Mais les Indiens ont refusé de se joindre car ils n’avaient pas le droit de vote au Canada.

Son fils était conducteur de camion ; il livrait du bois et il était fermier. Sa fille a également terminé la 12e année. Son père leur a dit qu’ils devaient obtenir leur diplôme à tout prix.
Les femmes ne travaillaient pas à l’extérieur du foyer. La famille utilisait du bois pour chauffer la maison. En hiver, il n’y avait pas de légumes verts : ils devaient donc préparer des conservespour l’hiver. Le mariage de son fils ainé fut solennisé en 1950, aux Indes. Il s’est rendu seul aux Indes pour le mariage. Son oncle, qui habitait aux Indes, avait arrangé le mariage. Tous ses enfants se sont mariés aux Indes.
Le fils de Ratan Kaut Thauli, Gyan Singh Thauli, né en 1928, au Canada, s’est joint à l’entrevue. Il a parlé de la Dépression économique et expliqué combien il était difficile pour son père de gagner sa vie au Canada à cette époque. Son père est arrivé au Canada en 1906. Avant la naissance de Gyan Singh, son père était prédicateur au Gurdwara et il travaillait dans une scierie. La scierie a brulé, alors ils ont déménagé à Sumas pour louer la ferme. Il y avait seulement une vingtaine de personnes qui travaillaient à la scierie d’Abbotsford. Il est allé à l’école à Chilliwack. Les enfants indiens jouaient avec les enfants japonais et ils pouvaient dire quelques mots en japonais.
La maison n’avait pas de système de chauffage. Ils faisaient bouillir l’eau sur la fournaise. Ils ont habité à Abbotsford pendant 9 ans. Il était difficile de gérer la ferme en hiver. Toute la famille travaillait sur la ferme et ils n’avaient pas de contacts avec l’extérieur.Il y avait deux épiceries tout près qui livraient la nourriture chez eux. Lorsque l’un d’eux était malade, il demeurait à Vancouver chez un membre de la famille, pendant quelques jours. Chaque vendredi au Gurdwara de Vancouver, on récitait le akhand path [une récitation continuelle du Guru Granth Sahib, un livre saint, pendant 48 heures], alors son père allait à Vancouver pour cette occasion. Ils ont déménagé de Chilliwack à Agassiz en 1939; il leur a fallu toute une journée pour se rendre à pieds avec les vaches. À Agassiz, ils ont loué une ferme qui n’avait ni électricité, ni eau courante. Ils devaient aller chercher l’eau très loin. Les gens devaient occuper un deuxième emploi pour améliorer leur sort, alors son père et son frère ainé ont commencé à travailler à la scierie d’Harrison Hot Springs, près d’Agassiz, en 1943. En 1942, ils ont acheté une voiture usagée pour 1300$ par paiements échelonnés et son frère a obtenu son permis de conduire. Tous les membres de la famille travaillaient sur la ferme pour nourrir les vaches, traire les vaches à la main et aller chercher de l’eau. La coopérative des producteurs de lait de la vallée du Fraser venait chercher le lait chez les fermiers.

Personne ne prévoyait rester au Canada. Ils voulaient seulement gagner de l’argent et retourner aux Indes.
En 1948, la famille avait amassé 26 000$. Ils ont acheté un camion pour 5000$. Dans le village, les Indiens ne pouvaient pas acheter une propriété mais ils pouvaient louer une ferme. D’Agassiz, ils ont acheté une ferme à Ladner. En 1949, il a obtenu un emploi sur l’Île Mitchell (dans le North Arm). Il fut trieur et ébarbeur dans une scierie pendant 13 ans et il gagnait 1$ de l’heure. Cette scierie a brulé. Il fut ensuite ébarbeur pendant 3 mois. Les Indiens ont signé un contrat : ils s’engageaient à embaucher huit personnes, choisies par les Indiens. Mais le syndicat a mis fin à ce système contractuel. Il y a eu une grève de deux mois dans les scieries organisée par la IWA [International Woodworkers of America].
En 1956, la ferme a pris de l’expansion. Ils ont obtenu un permis pour bâtir une nouvelle maison et la ville a installé l’eau courante. Cette maison avait un système de chauffage central. Ils avaient une entreprise laitière lucrative et la traite était désormais automatisée. Ils ont acheté leur premier tracteur en 1948. Chaque ferme possédait au moins un tracteur. Ils ont commencé à embaucher des jeunes de niveau secondaire pour le travail saisonnier. Lorsqu’il a cessé de travailler à la scierie, la ferme comptait 225 acres, 140 vaches, quatre tracteurs, 6 camions à benne et de la machinerie agricole. Ils n’avaient jamais le temps de se reposer, aucun passe-temps : le but de la famille était de faire de l’argent.
Kapoor et Mayo connaissaient beaucoup de succès dans l’industrie du bois, Duman dans le camionnage, et la famille de Gyan Singh dans l’industrie agricole et laitière. Kabul Singh et Hardas Puria étaient de grands producteurs de patates.
Son père fut président du Gurdwara pendant plusieurs années. En 1953, pendant longtemps, il s’est impliqué dans les affaires du Gurdwara sur la 11e Avenue.
Gyan a coupé ses cheveux en 1950. Son frère avait de la difficulté à pratiquer des sports en raison de son turban, alors il a décidé de se couper les cheveux. À cette époque, tout le monde portait un turban noir au Canada parce qu’il n’y avait que du tissu noir disponible. Les femmes allaient au Gurdwara avec des vêtements occidentaux recouverts de draps [parce que les vêtements occidentaux ne sont pas acceptés dans le Gurdwara]. Toutes les femmes portaient des robes canadiennes parce qu’elles devaient se mêler à la culture. Il s’est marié en 1958. Sa femme était indienne et âgée de 17 ans le jour de son mariage. Ils se sont mariés au Gurdwara sur la 11e Avenue. Elle était vêtue d’une robe blanche avec un chunni rouge [foulard]. Le granthi [prête du Gurdwara] a lu les 4 lawan [hymne de mariage] mais il ne faisait pas les pheras [encerclement religieux du texte sacré] et on n’a pris aucune photo. Ce fut un mariage simple. Ils ont célébré leur 25e anniversaire de mariage avec akhand path au Gurdwara. Le comité du Gurdwara leur a donné un plat en argenterie pour leur 25e anniversaire. En 1973, toute sa famille est allée aux Indes.
ਰਤਨ ਕੌਰ ਥੌਲੀ ਦਾ ਵਿਆਹ 16 ਸਾਲ ਦੀ ਉਮਰ ਵਿਚ 1912 ਵਿਚ ਇੰਡੀਆ ਵਿਚ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ। ਉਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਤੀ ਦੂਜੀ ਵਾਰ ਭਾਰਤ 1912 ਵਿਚ ਜਾ ਕੇ 1914 ਵਿਚ ਵਾਪਿਸ ਕੈਨੇਡਾ ਆ ਗਏ ਸਨ.। ਰਤਨ ਕੌਰ ਵਿਆਹ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਦ 11 ਸਾਲ ਇਕੱਲੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਰਿਸ਼ਤੇਦਾਰਾਂ ਕੋਲ ਰਹੇ। ਕੈਨੇਡਾ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਨੇ ਜਦੋਂ ਪਤਨੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਅਣਵਿਆਹੇ 18 ਸਾਲ ਤੋਂ ਘਟ ਉਮਰ ਦੇ ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਮੰਗਾਉਣ ਦੀ ਆਗਿਆ ਦਿਤੀ ਸੀ ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਵੇਲੇ ਰਤਨ ਕੌਰ ਕੈਨੇਡਾ ਆਏ। ਉਨਾਂ ਨੇ 1923 ਵਿਚ ਸਫ਼ਰ ਸ਼ੁ੍ਰੂ ਕੀਤਾ ਅਤੇ 1924 ਵਿਚ ਉਹ ਕੈਨੇਡਾ ਪਹੁੰਚੇ ਸਨ। ੳਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਤਿੰਨ ਮਹੀਨੇ ਹਾਂਗ ਕਾਂਗ ਰਹਿਣਾ ਪਿਆ ਸੀ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਥੇ ਕੀਤੀ ਗਈ ਡਾਕਟਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਉਨਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਕੁਕਰਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਬੀਮਾਰੀ ਨਿਕਲੀ ਸੀ। ਇਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਉਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਹਾਂਗ ਕਾਂਗ ਵਿਚ ਕੁਕਰਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਇਲਾਜ ਕਰਾਉਣਾ ਪਿਆ। ਹੋਰ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੇ ਲੋਕ ਵੀ ਡਾਕਟਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਫੇਲ ਹੋਏ ਸਨ, ਕਈਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਤਾਂ ਵਾਪਿਸ ਇੰਡੀਆ ਭੇਜ ਦਿਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ। ਰਤਨ ਕੌਰ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਲਾਗਲੇ ਪਿੰਡ ਦਾ ਤਾਰਾ ਸਿੰਘ, ਠਾਕੁਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਅਤੇ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਆਏ ਸਨ। ਰਤਨ ਕੌਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਲ 700 ਰੁਪਏ ਲਿਆਈ ਸੀ। ਭਾਰਤ ਮੁੜਕੇ ਉਹ ਸਿਰਫ ਇਕ ਵਾਰ 1969 ਵਿਚ ਗਏ ਸਨ।
ਉਨਾਂ ਆਪਣਾ ਸਫਰ ਫਗਵਾੜੇ ਤੋਂ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕੀਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਕਲੱਕਤੇ, ਹਾਂਗ ਕਾਂਗ ਦੇ ਰਸਤਿਓਂ ਉਹ ਵੈਨਕੂਵਰ ਪਹੁੰਚੇ ਸਨ। ਇਕ ਹਫਤਾ ਉਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕਲੱਕਤੇ ਵਿਚ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰੇ ਵਿਚ ਰੁਕਣਾ ਪਿਆ। ਸਮੁਦਰੀ ਜਹਾਜ਼ ਮਾਲਵਾਹਕ ਜਹਾਜ਼ ਸੀ। ਇਹ ਜਹਾਜ਼ ਇਕ ਰਾਤ ਰੰਗੂਨ, ਸਿੰਘਾਪੁਰ ਅਤੇ ਫਿਰ ਇਸਨੂੰ ਹਾਂਗ ਕਾਂਗ ਪਹੁੰਚਣ ਵਿਚ ਸੱਤ ਦਿਨ ਲਗੇ ਸਨ। ਜਹਾਜ਼ ਵਿਚ ਕਈ ਲੋਕ ਬਿਮਾਰ ਵੀ ਪੈ ਗਏ ਸਨ। ਨਾਲ ਦੇ ਮੁਸਾਫਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੇ ਜਪਾਨੀ, ਚੀਨੀ ਅਤੇ ਗੋਰੇ ਲੋਕ ਸਨ। ਜਪਾਨੀ ਔਰਤਾਂ ਨੇ ਜਦੋਂ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਵਾਰ ਰਤਨ ਕੌਰ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਉਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਡਰ ਗਈਆਂ। ਹਾਂਗ ਕਾਂਗ ਵਿਚ ਲੋਕ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰੇ ਵਿਚ ਰੁਕਿਆ ਕਰਦੇ ਸਨ ਜਿਥੇ ਉਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਰੋਟੀ-ਪਾਣੀ ਅਤੇ ਠਹਿਰਨ ਦੀ ਸਹੂਲਤ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਸੀ। ਹਾਂਗ ਕਾਂਗ ਵਿਚ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਅਤੇ ਫੌਜ ਰਿਹਾ ਕਰਦੀ ਸੀ।
ਹਾਂਗ ਕਾਂਗ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਪਿੰਡ ਦਾ ੳਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਸਾਥ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਹੀ ਵੈਨਕੂਵਰ ਲਈ ਚਲਾ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ। ਇਸ ਕਰਕੇ ੳਥੋਂ ਉਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਇਕ ਪਤੀ ਪਤਨੀ ਸ਼ਾਮਿਲ ਹੋ ਗਏ ਸਨ। ਹਾਂਗ ਕਾਂਗ ਤੋਂ ਸਮੁਦਰੀ ਜਹਾਜ਼ ਸ਼ੰਗਈ, ਨਾਗਾਸਾਕੀ, ਕੋਕੋਈ ਤੋਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਵੈਨਕੂਵਰ ਆਇਆ ਸੀ। ਰਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਮੁਸਾਫਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਗਿਣਤੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਸੀ। ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਰਵਾਇਤੀ ਕਪੜਿਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਵੈਨਕੂਵਰ ਉਤਰੇ ਸਨ। ਉਸ ਵੇਲੇ ਚਾਰ ਸਮੁਦਰੀ ਜਹਾਜ਼ ਆਇਆ ਜਾਇਆ ਕਰਦੇ ਸਨ। ਹਰ ਪੰਦਰਾਂ ਦਿਨਾਂ ਬਾਦ ਜਹਾਜ਼ ਸਫਰ ਲਈ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਸੀ। ਪਿੰਡ ਦੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੇ ਉਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਇਤਲਾਹ ਕੀਤੀ ਕਿ ੳਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਪਤਨੀ ਨੂੰ ਕੁਕਰਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਇਲਾਜ ਲਈ ਹਾਂਗ ਕਾਂਗ ਰੁਕਣਾ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ੳਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਲੈਣ ਲਈ ਕੈਨੇਡਾ ਤੋਂ ਚਲ ਲਏ। ਪਰ ਰਤਨ ਕੌਰ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਹੀ ਸਮੁਦਰੀ ਜਹਾਜ਼ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਉਥੋਂ ਤੁਰ ਪਏ ਸਨ, ਇਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਉਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਮੇਲ ਹਾਂਗ ਕਾਂਗ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਿਆ ਸੀ। ਵੈਨਕੂਵਰ ਪਹੁੰਚਣ ਉਤੇ ਰਤਨ ਕੌਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਤੀ ਦੇ ਆਉਣ ਤਕ ਵੈਨਕੂਵਰ ਵਿਚ ਦੂਜੇ ਐਵਨਿਉ ਵਾਲੇ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰੇ ਵਿਚ ਰੁਕੇ ਰਹੇ।
ਉਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਤੀ ਐਬੋਟਸਫੋਰਡ ਵਿਚ ਇਕ ਆਰਾ ਮਿੱਲ ਵਿਚ ਤਿੰਨ ਡਾਲਰ ਪ੍ਰਤੀ ਦਿਨ ਦਿਹਾੜੀ ਉਤੇ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਸਨ। ਮਿੱਲਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾਤਰ ਲੋਕ ਬਿਨਾਂ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਦੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਸਨ ਇਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਉਹ ਕੁੱਕ ਹਾਊਸ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਸਨ। ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਕਰਕੇ ਰਤਨ ਕੌਰ ਅਤੇ ਉਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਤੀ ਮਿੱਲ ਦੇ ਚਾਰ ਕਮਰਿਆਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਰਹੇ। ਰਤਨ ਕੌਰ ਐਬੋਟਸਫੋਰਡ ਵਿਚ ਚਾਰ ਸਾਲ ਇੱਕਲਿਆਂ ਰਹੀ। ਕੈਨੇਡਾ ਵਿਚ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਵਾਰ ਉਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਬਰਫ਼ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਵੇਖੀ ਸੀ, ਜਿਸ ਉਤੇ ਉਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਸੋਚਿਆ ਕਿ ਸ਼ਾਇਦ ਰੂੰ ਉਡਦਾ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ। ਐਬੋਟਸਫੋਰਡ ਦਾ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਬਹੁਤ ਨਜ਼ਦੀਕ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਸੀ। ਬਾਦ ਵਿਚ ਮਿੱਲ ਮਾਲਕਾਂ ਨੇ ਵੈਨਕੂਵਰ ਤੋਂ ਇਕ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਮੰਗਾਇਆ ਸੀ। ਗੁਰਪੁਰਬ ਦੇ ਮੌਕੇ ਉਤੇ ਉਹ ਵੈਨਕੂਵਰ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰੇ ਜਾਇਆ ਕਰਦੇ ਸਨ। 1910 ਵਿਚ ਚਿਲਾਵੈਕ ਤੋਂ ਵੈਨਕੂਵਰ ਲਈ ਰੇਲਗੱਡੀ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਹੋਈ ਸੀ ਪਰ ਬਾਦ ਵਿਚ ਇਹ ਗੱਡੀ ਬੰਦ ਕਰ ਦਿਤੀ ਗਈ ਸੀ। ਹਰ ਅੱਧੇ ਮੀਲ ਉਤੇ ਸਟੇਸ਼ਨ ਹੋਇਆ ਕਰਦਾ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਗੱਡੀ ਦਿਨ ਵਿਚ ਤਿੰਨ ਵਾਰ ਚਲਦੀ ਸੀ। ਚਿਲਾਵੈਕ ਤੋਂ ਵੈਨਕੂਵਰ ਪਹੁੰਚਣ ਵਿਚ ਗੱਡੀ ਨੂੰ ਤਿੰਨ ਘੰਟੇ ਲਗਦੇ ਸਨ।
ਆਰਥਿਕ ਮੰਦੀ ਸਮੇਂ ਜਦੋਂ ਮਿੱਲਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਕੰਮ ਬੰਦ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰੇ ਵਿਚ ਕੋਈ ਗ੍ਰੰਥੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ। ਗੁਰਪੁਰਬ ਦੇ ਮੌਕੇ ਉਤੇ ਸੰਗਤ ਨੇ ਉਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰੇ ਵਿਚ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕੀਤੀ। ਇਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਉਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਨੇ ਤਿੰਨ ਸਾਲ ਤਕ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰੇ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਮੁਫਤ ਸੇਵਾ ਕੀਤੀ। ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਕੂਲ ਪੜਨ ਲਈ ਭੇਜਿਆ। 1933 ਵਿਚ ਉਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਭਾਈਵਾਲੀ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਕੇ ਕੁਲ 800 ਡਾਲਰ ਦਾ ਇਕ ਫਾਰਮ, ਲੀਜ਼ ਉਤੇ ਲਿਆ। ਜਿਸ ਲਈ ਉਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਗਾਵਾਂ ਬੈਂਕ ਕੋਲ ਗਿਰਵੀ ਰਖੀਆਂ। ਹਰ ਮਹੀਨੇ 32 ਡਾਲਰ ਦੀ ਕਿਸ਼ਤ ਦੇਣੀ ਵੀ ਬਹੁਤ ਮਸ਼ਕਿਲ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਸੀ। ਫਾਰਮ ਵਿਚ ਸਿਰਫ ਘਾਹ ਅਤੇ ਓਟ ਉਗਾਉਂਦੇ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ 8 ਗਾਵਾਂ ਸਨ। ਸਾਰਾ ਦਿਨ ਉਹ ਕੰਮ ਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਰੁਝੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਘਰ ਦੀ ਬਹੁਤ ਮਾੜੀ ਹਾਲਤ ਵੇਖੀ। ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਦ ਉਨਾਂ ਨੇ 1948 ਵਿਚ ਸੁਮਾਸ ਵਿਚ ਇਕ ਫਾਰਮ ਖਰੀਦਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਉਨਾਂ ਕੋਲ 20 ਗਾਵਾਂ ਸਨ। ਨਵੰਬਰ ਤੋਂ ਸਰਦੀਆਂ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਸਾਰ ਹੀ ਅਤੇ ਅਪ੍ਰੈਲ ਦੇ ਅਖੀਰ ਤਕ ਗਾਵਾਂ ਘਰ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੀ ਰਖਦੇ ਸਨ। ਉਸ ਵੇਲੇ ਘਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਨਾਂ ਤਾਂ ਬਿਜਲੀ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਨਾਂ ਹੀ ਪਾਣੀ। ਫਰੇਜ਼ਰ ਵੈਲੀ ਮਿਲਕ ਪ੍ਰੋਡਯੂਸਰ ਦੇ ਟਰੱਕ ਉਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਦੁੱਧ ਲੈ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਸਨ। ਸ਼ਹਿਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਘੋੜਾ-ਬਘੀਆਂ ਉਤੇ ਲੋਕ ਦੁੱਧ ਵੇਚਿਆ ਕਰਦੇ ਸਨ। ਦੁੱਧ ਦਾ ਪੈਸਾ ਹਰ ਦੋ ਹਫਤੇ ਬਾਦ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਸੀ। ਬਾਦ ਵਿਚ ਦੁੱਧ ਦੀ ਗ੍ਰੇਡਿੰਗ – 1 ਪ੍ਰਤੀਸ਼ਤ, 2 ਪ੍ਰਤੀਸ਼ਤ ਦੀ ਹਿਸਾਬ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕਰ ਦਿਤੀ ਗਈ। ਰਤਨ ਕੌਰ ਫਾਰਮ ਵਿਚ ਸਬਜ਼ੀਆਂ ਵੀ ਉਗਾਹ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਸਨ। ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੇ ਲੀਜ਼ ਉਤੇ ਫਾਰਮ ਲਏ। ਉਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਬੱਚੇ ਪਗੜੀ ਵਿਚ ਸਕੂਲ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਸਨ ਪਰ ਉਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਿਖੀ।
ਫਾਰਮ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਿਕ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਜ਼ਮੀਨ ਵੇਚ ਦਿਤੀ ਜਿਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਉਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਉਥੋਂ ਜਾਣਾ ਪਿਆ। ਚਿਲਾਵੈਕ ਵਿਚ ਉਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਕਿਰਾਏ ਉਤੇ 100 ਏਕੜ ਦਾ ਇਕ ਫਾਰਮ ਲਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਚਾਰ ਸਾਲ ਉਹ ਉੱਥੇ ਰਹੇ। ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਦ ਉਹ ਐਗੇਸੀ ਚਲੇ ਗਏ ਜਿਥੇ ਸਲਾਨਾ 950 ਡਾਲਰ ਕਿਰਾਏ ਉਤੇ ਫਾਰਮ ਲਿਆ ਅਤੇ 9 ਸਾਲ ਉਥੇ ਰਹੇ। ਗਾਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਚਿਲੀਵੈਕ ਤੋਂ ਐਗੇਸੀ ਪੈਦਲ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਗਏ ਸਨ। ਇਸੀ ਸਮੇਂ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਦੁੱਧ ਦੀਆਂ ਕੀਮਤਾਂ ਵਧ ਗਈਆਂ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਯੁਨੀਅਨ ਵੀ ਬਣ ਗਈ ਸੀ ਇਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਤਨਖਾਹ ਵੀ ਵਧ ਗਈ। ਦੂਜੀ ਜੰਗ ਦੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਉਹ ਐਗੇਸੀ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਸਨ। 1924 ਵਿਚ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਏ ਉਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਵਡੇ ਲਵਕੇ ਨੂੰ ਲੜਾਈ ਵਿਚ ਸ਼ਾਮਿਲ ਹੋਣ ਲਈ ਚਿਠੀ ਮਿਲੀ ਸੀ। ਪਰ ਈਸਟ ਇੰਡੀਅਨ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੇ ਵੋਟ ਪਾਉਣ ਦਾ ਹੱਕ ਨਾਂ ਹੋਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਲੜਾਈ ਵਿਚ ਜਾਣ ਤੋਂ ਨਾਂਹ ਕਰ ਦਿਤੀ ਸੀ।
ਉਸ ਸਮੇਂ ਤਕ ਉਨਾਂ ਕੋਲ 30 ਗਾਵਾਂ ਹੋ ਗਈਆਂ ਸਨ । ਉਨਾਂ ਨੇ 1948 ਵਿਚ ਲੈਂਡਰ ਵਿਚ 150 ਏਕੜ ਦਾ ਫਾਰਮ ਖਰੀਦ ਲਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਦੁੱਧ ਚੋਣ ਵਾਲੀਆਂ ਮਸ਼ੀਨਾਂ ਵੀ ਖਰੀਦ ਲਈਆਂ। ਟਰੱਕ ਵੀ ਉਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਖਰੀਦ ਲਿਆ ਸੀ ਤੇ ਟਰੱਕ ਵਿਚ ਗਾਵਾਂ ਲੈਂਡਰ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਆਏ ਸਨ। ਉਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਲੜਕਾ 12 ਜਮਾਤਾਂ ਪਾਸ ਹੈ ਪਰ 13ਵੀਂ ਜਮਾਤ ਵਿਚ ਪਗੜੀ ਪਾਉਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਪੜਾਈ ਛਡ ਦਿਤੀ ਕਿਉਕਿ ਸਕੂਲ ਵਿਚ ਕੁਝ ਸਰੀਰਕ ਟ੍ਰੇਨਿੰਗ ਦਿਤੇ ਜਾਣ ਕਾਰਣ ਪਗੜੀ ਕਾਰਣ ਮੁਸ਼ਕਿਲ ਆਂਦੀ ਸੀ। ਉਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਲੜਕਾ ਟਰੱਕ ਚਲਾਉਂਦਾ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਫਾਰਮ ਵਿਚ ਵੀ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਸੀ। ੳਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਲੜਕੀ ਵੀ 12 ਜਮਾਤਾਂ ਪਾਸ ਹੈ। ਉਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਦਾ ਕਹਿਣਾ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਡਿਗ੍ਰੀ ਜ਼ਰੂਰ ਲਓ ਭਾਂਵੇਂ ਉਸ ਲਈ ਕਿੰਨੀ ਵੀ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਕਿਉਂ ਨਾਂ ਕਰਨੀ ਪਏ।
ਉਸ ਵੇਲੇ ਕੋਈ ਵੀ ਔਰਤ ਬਾਹਰ ਕੰਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਸੀ। ਹਰ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਲਕੜਾਂ ਬਾਲ ਕੇ ਕੰਮ ਕੀਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਸੀ। ਸਰਦੀਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਹਰੀ ਸਬਜੀਆਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦੀਆਂ ਸਨ ਇਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਉਹ ਸਰਦੀਆਂ ਲਈ ਹਰੀ ਸਬਜੀਆਂ ਸੁਖਾ ਕੇ ਰਖ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਸਨ। ਉਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਵਡੇ ਲੜਕੇ ਦਾ ਵਿਆਹ 1950 ਵਿਚ ਭਾਰਤ ਵਿਚ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ। ਵਿਆਹ ਕਰਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਘਰੋਂ ਉਹ ਇਕੱਲਾ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ। ਤਾਏ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਲਈ ਲੜਕੀ ਵੇਖੀ ਹੋਈ ਸੀ। ਉਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਵਿਆਹ ਭਾਰਤ ਤੋਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਭਾਈਚਾਰੇ ਵਿਚ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
ਰਤਨ ਕੌਰ ਦਾ ਦੂਜਾ ਲੜਕਾ ਗਿਆਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਥੌਲੀ 1928 ਵਿਚ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ, ਉਸਨੇ ਵੀ ਇੰਟਰਵਿਊ ਵਿਚ ਸ਼ਾਮਿਲ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਲੜਾਈ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਦ ਹੋਈ ਆਰਥਿਕ ਮੰਦੀ ਬਾਰੇ ਦਸਦਿਆਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਉਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਨੇ ਕੈਨੇਡਾ ਵਿਚ ਰੋਜ਼ੀ-ਰੋਟੀ ਕਮਾਉਣ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਜਦੋ-ਜਹਿਦ ਕੀਤੀ। ਪਹਿਲੀ ਵਾਰ ਉਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਿਤਾ 1906 ਵਿਚ ਕੈਨੇਡਾ ਆਏ ਸਨ। ਗਿਆਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੇ ਜਨਮ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਉਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰੇ ਵਿਚ ਗ੍ਰੰਥੀ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਮੁਫਤ ਕਰਦੇ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਮਿੱਲ ਵਿਚ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਸਨ। ਮਿੱਲ ਸਾੜ ਦਿਤੇ ਜਾਣ ਕਾਰਣ ਉਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਮਾਸ ਵਿਚ ਜਾਣਾ ਪਿਆ ਸੀ। ਜਿਥੇ ਉਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਭਾਈਵਾਲੀ ਵਿਚ ਇਕ ਫਾਰਮ ਲੀਜ਼ ਉਤੇ ਲਿਆ ਸੀ। ਉਸ ਫਾਰਮ ਵਿਚ ਉਨਾਂ ਕੋਲ ਗਾਂਵਾਂ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਕੋਈ 20-25 ਲੋਕ ਐਬੋਟਸਫੋਰਡ ਮਿੱਲ ਵਿਚ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਸਨ। ਉਹ ਚਿਲੀਵੈਕ ਸਕੂਲ ਵਿਚ ਪੜਨ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਸਨ। ਬੱਚੇ, ਜਾਪਾਨੀ ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਖੇਡਦੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਉਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਜਾਪਾਨੀ ਬੋਲਣੀ ਆ ਗਈ।
ਘਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਅੰਦਰ ਗਰਮ ਰਖਣ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਸਿਸਟਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਸੀ। ਲਕੱੜਾਂ ਬਾਲ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਵਰਤਣ ਲਈ ਪਾਣੀ ਗਰਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਸਨ। ਉਹ 9 ਸਾਲ ਤਕ ਐਬੋਟਸਫੋਰਡ ਵਿਚ ਰਹੇ। ਸਰਦੀਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਗੁਜ਼ਾਰਾ ਕਰਨਾ ਬਹੁਤ ਔਖਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਸੀ। ਸਾਰਾ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਫਾਰਮ ਵਿਚ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਸੀ। ਬਾਹਰੀ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਨਾਲ ਉਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਸਰੋਕਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ। ਘਰ ਦੇ ਨਜ਼ਦੀਕ ਕਰਿਆਨੇ ਦੀਆਂ ਦੋ ਦੁਕਾਨਾਂ ਹੁੰਦੀਆਂ ਸਨ। ਦੁਕਾਨਦਾਰ ਹੀ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਸਮਾਨ ਦੇ ਜਾਇਆ ਕਰਦਾ ਸੀ। ਇਕ ਵਾਰ ਬੀਮਾਰ ਪੈ ਜਾਣ ਉਤੇ ਉਹ ਇਲਾਜ ਵਾਅਤੇ ਕੁਝ ਦਿਨਾਂ ਲਈ ਵੈਨਕੂਵਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਰਿਸ਼ਤੇਦਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ। ਹਰ ਸ਼ੁਕਰਵਾਰ ਵੈਨਕੂਵਰ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰੇ ਵਿਚ ਅਖੰਡ-ਪਾਠ ਰਖਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਸੀ ਤਾਂ ਉਨਾ ਦਿਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਉਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਜੀ ਵੈਨਕੂਵਰ ਪਾਠ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਸਨ।
ਉਹ 1939 ਵਿਚ ਚਿਲੀਵੈਕ ਤੋਂ ਪੈਦਲ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਗਾਂਵਾਂ ਲਿਜਾਕੇ ਐਗੇਸੀ ਰਹਿਣ ਲਈ ਗਏ ਸਨ। ਜਿਸ ਵਿਚ ਉਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਸਾਰਾ ਦਿਨ ਲਗ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ। ਐਗੇਸੀ ਵਿਚ ਉਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਇਕ ਫਾਰਮ ਕਿਰਾਏ ਉਤੇ ਲਿਆ ਸੀ ਜਿਸ ਵਿਚ ਬਿਜਲੀ – ਪਾਣੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ। ਬਹੁਤ ਦੂਰੋਂ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਲਿਆਣਾ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਸੀ। ਘਰ ਦਾ ਗੁਜ਼ਾਰਾ ਚਲਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਦੋ ਨੌਕਰੀਆਂ ਕਰਨੀਆਂ ਜ਼ਰੂਰੀ ਸਨ। ਇਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਉਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਵਡੇ ਭਰਾ ਨੇ 1943 ਵਿਚ ਐਗੇਸੀ ਵਿਚ ਹੌਟ ਸਪ੍ਰਿੰਗ ਵਿਖੇ ਇਕ ਆਰਾ ਮਿੱਲ ਵਿਚ ਕੰਮ ਕੀਤਾ। ਘਰ ਦਾ ਹਰ ਇਕ ਜੀਅ ਫਾਰਮ ਵਿਚ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਸੀ। ਗਾਂਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਚਾਰਾ ਪਾਣ, ਦੋਵੇਂ ਵੇਲੇ ਹੱਥੀਂ ਗਾਂਵਾਂ ਦਾ ਦੁੱਧ ਚੋਣਾ ਅਤੇ ਬਾਹਰੋਂ ਢੋਹ ਕੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਲਿਆਉਣਾ। ਫਰੇਜ਼ਰ ਮਿਲਕ ਪ੍ਰੋਡਯੁਸਰ ਕਿਰਸਾਨਾਂ ਕੋਲੋਂ ਦੁੱਧ ਇਕੱਠਾ ਕਰਕੇ ਲੈ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਸੀ।
ਮਿੱਲ ਵਿਚ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਕੇ ਉਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਕਮਾਈ ਵਧੀ ਸੀ। ਸੜਕ ਉਤੇ ਤਾਂ ਬਿਜਲੀ ਸੀ ਪਰ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ, ਇਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਉਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਫਾਰਮ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਿਕ ਨੂੰ ਫਾਰਮ ਲਈ ਬਿਜਲੀ ਲੈਣ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਕਿਹਾ। ਫਾਰਮ ਵਿਚ ਉਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਖੂਹ ਬਣਾਕੇ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਪਾਣੀ ਦਾ ਬੰਦੋਬਸਤ ਕੀਤਾ। 25 ਸਾਲ ਤਕ ਉਹ ਪਾਣੀ ਬਾਹਰੋਂ ਭਰ ਕੇ ਲਿਆਂਦੇ ਰਹੇ ਸਨ। ਐਗੇਸੀ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ ਫਾਰਮ ਦਾ ਸਲਾਨਾ ਕਿਰਾਇਆ 950 ਡਾਲਰ ਦਿੰਦੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਸਨ। ਉਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਸਕੂਲ ਲਈ ਦੋ ਸਾਈਕਲਾਂ ਵੀ ਖਰੀਦਿਆਂ। ਸੰਸਾਰ ਜੰਗ ਦੇ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਹਰ ਚੀਜ਼ ਰਾਸ਼ਨ ਉਤੇ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਸੀ। ਉਨਾਂ ਨੇ 1947 ਵਿਚ ਹਾਈ ਸਕੂਲ ਪਾਸ ਕੀਤਾ। ਗਰਮੀਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ ਵੀ ਮਿੱਲ ਵਿਚ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਸਨ। ਘਰ ਦੇ ਹਰ ਜੀਅ ਦੀ ਕਮਾਈ ਇਕੋ ਥਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਇਕੱਠੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਸੀ। ਹਰ ਇਕ ਦਾ ਧਿਆਨ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਨ ਅਤੇ ਪੈਸਾ ਕਮਾਉਣ ਵਿਚ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਸੀ। ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ ਅੰਗ੍ਰੇਜ਼ੀ ਦਾ ਅਖਬਾਰ ਲਿਆ ਕਰਦੇ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਉਸਦੀ ਡਿਊਟੀ ਜੰਗ ਅਤੇ ਬਾਕੀ ਦੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਬਾਰੇ ਖ਼ਬਰਾਂ ਪੜਕੇ ਸੁਣਾਉਣ ਦੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਸੀ। ਉਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਸਮਾਜਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਸੀ । ਕੈਨੇਡਾ ਵਿਚ ਉਸ ਵੇਲੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਭਾਈਚਾਰੇ ਦੇ ਕੋਈ ਖਾਸ ਮੁੰਡੇ ਕੁੜੀਆਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਸਨ। 1950 ਵਿਚ ਭਾਰਤੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਅਬਾਦੀ ਕੈਨੇਡਾ ਵਿਚ ਵਧੀ ਹੈ। ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਕੋਈ ਵੀ ਇਥੇ ਵਸ ਜਾਣ ਬਾਰੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੋਚਦਾ ਸੀ। ਉਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਕਸਦ ਪੈਸਾ ਕਮਾ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਦੇਸ਼ ਵਾਪਿਸ ਚਲੇ ਜਾਣ ਦਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਸੀ।
1948 ਤਕ ਉਨਾਂ ਨੇ 26000 ਡਾਲਰ ਜਮਾਂ ਕਰ ਲਏ ਸਨ। ਉਨਾਂ ਨੇ 5000 ਡਾਲਰ ਦਾ ਇਕ ਟਰੱਕ ਖਰੀਦਿਆ। ਸ਼ਹਿਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਘਰ ਖਰੀਦਣ ਦੀ ਮਨਾਹੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਸੀ ਪਰ ਫਾਰਮ ਖਰੀਦਣ ਵਿਚ ਕੋਈ ਮੁਸ਼ਕਿਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਸੀ। ਐਗੇਸੀ ਤੋਂ ਉਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਲੈਂਡਰ ਵਿਚ ਫਾਰਮ ਖਰੀਦਿਆ। ਗਿਆਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ 1949 ਵਿਚ ਮਿਸ਼ੇਲ ਆਈਲੈਂਡ ਵਿਚ ਨੌਰਥ ਆਰਮ ਸਾਅ ਮਿੱਲ ਵਿਚ 13 ਸਾਲ ਤਕ ਕੰਮ ਕੀਤਾ। ਜਿਥੇ ਉਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਗਰੇਡਰ ਅਤੇ ਟ੍ਰਿਮਰ ਵਜੋਂ ਇਕ ਡਾਲਰ ਫੀ ਘੰਟੇ ੳਤੇ ਕੰਮ ਕੀਤਾ। ਇਹ ਮਿੱਲ ਸੜ ਜਾਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਦ ਉਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਲੰਬਰ ਵਿਚ ਤਿੰਨ ਮਹੀਨੇ ਟ੍ਰਿਮਰ ਵਜੋਂ ਕੰਮ ਕੀਤਾ। ਆਪਣੇ ਲੋਕ ਮਿੱਲਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਅੱਠ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਠੇਕਾ ਲੈ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਉਸ ਕੰਮ ਵਿਚ ਲਾ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਸਨ। ਬਾਦ ਵਿਚ ਯੁਨੀਅਨ ਨੇ ਠੇਕਾ ਸਿਸਟਮ ਬੰਦ ਕਰ ਦਿਤਾ ਸੀ। ਇਕ ਵਾਰ ਮਿੱਲਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਆਇ ਡਬਲਯੂ ਏ ਦੀ ਦੋ ਮਹੀਨੇ ਤਕ ਹੜਤਾਲ ਰਹੀ ਸੀ।
1956 ਵਿਚ ਉਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਕਾਫੀ ਤਰੱਕੀ ਕਰ ਲਈ। ਫਾਰਮ ਵਿਚ ਉਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਨਵਾਂ ਘਰ ਬਣਾਨ ਦਾ ਪਰਮਿਟ ਲਿਆ। ਘਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਦਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਸਪਲਾਈ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ। ਘਰ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੀਟਿੰਗ ਸਿਸਟਮ ਹੋ ਗਏ ਸਨ। ਦੁੱਧ ਦਾ ਉਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਕਾਰੋਬਾਰ ਬਹਤ ਵਡਾ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਉਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰਾ ਪੈਸਾ ਕਮਾਇਆ। ਸਾਰਾ ਕੰਮ ਆਟੋਮੈਟਿਕ ਮਸ਼ੀਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਹੋਣ ਲਗ ਪਿਆ। 1948 ਵਿਚ ਉਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਪਹਿਲਾ ਨਵਾਂ ਟ੍ਰੈਕਟਰ ਖਰੀਦਿਆ। ਹਰ ਇਕ ਫਾਰਮ ਵਿਚ ਉਸ ਵੇਲੇ ਘਟੋ ਘਟ ਇਕ ਟ੍ਰੈਕਟਰ ਤਾਂ ਹੈ ਹੀ ਸੀ। ਸੀਜ਼ਨਲ ਕੰਮ ਲਈ ਉਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਸਕੂਲੀ ਬੱਚੇ ਕੰਮ ਉਤੇ ਰਖਣੇ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕਰ ਲਏ। ਜਦੋਂ ਗਿਆਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਮਿੱਲ ਦਾ ਕੰਮ ਛਡਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਦ ਉਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਫਾਰਮ ਵਧਾ ਕੇ 225 ਏਕੜ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ, 4 ਟ੍ਰੈਕਟਰ, 6 ਡੰਪ ਟਰੱਕ ਅਤੇ ਫਾਰਮ ਵਿਚ ਸਾਰਾ ਕੰਮ ਮਸ਼ੀਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਹੋਣ ਲਗਾ। ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਕੋਲ ਆਰਾਮ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਵੀ ਸਮਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ, ਨਾਂ ਹੀ ਹਸੱਣ-ਖੇਡਣ ਦਾ ਸਮਾਂ, ਬਸ ਮਕਸਦ ਸੀ ਪੈਸਾ ਕਮਾਉਣਾ।
ਆਪਣੇ ਭਾਈਚਾਰੇ ਦੇ ਕਾਮਯਾਬ ਲੋਕ ਵੀ ਕਾਫੀ ਹੋ ਗਏ ਸਨ। ਆਰਾ ਮਿੱਲ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਓ ਅਤੇ ਕਪੂਰ , ਟ੍ਰਕਿੰਗ ਕੰਪਨੀ ਵਿਚ ਦੁਮੰਣ, ਫਾਰਮਿੰਗ ਅਤੇ ਡੇਅਰੀ ਕਾਰੋਬਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਗਿਆਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਦਾ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ, ਲੋਅਰ ਮੇਨਲੈਂਡ ਵਿਚ ਕਾਬੁਲ ਸਿੰਘ ਅਤੇ ਹਰਦਾਸ ਪੁਰੀਆ ਆਲੂਆਂ ਦੇ ਫਾਰਮਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਬਹੁਤ ਕਾਮਯਾਬ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਰਹੇ ਨੇ।
ਗਿਆਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਕਈ ਸਾਲ ਤਕ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰੇ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨ ਰਹੇ ਸਨ। 1953 ਵਿਚ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਮੇਂ ਤਕ ਉਹ 11ਐਵਨਿਊ ਵਾਲੇ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰੇ ਦੇ ਕੰਮ ਕਾਜ ਵਿਚ ਸ਼ਾਮਿਲ ਰਹੇ।
ਗਿਆਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ 1950 ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣੇ ਕੇਸ ਕਟਾ ਲਏ ਜਦਕਿ ੳਸਦੇ ਭਰਾ ਨੇ ਸਕੂਲ ਵਿਚ ਖੇਡਾਂ ਸਮੇਂ ਪਗੜੀ ਨਾਲ ਮੁਸ਼ਕਿਲ ਹੋਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਵਾਲ ਕਟਾ ਲਏ ਸਨ। ੳਸ ਸਮੇਂ ਕੈਨੇਡਾ ਵਿਚ ਸਾਰੇ ਲੋਕ ਕਾਲੀਆਂ ਪਗੜੀਆਂ ਬੰਨਦੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਸਨ। ਸਿਰਫ ਕਾਲੇ ਰੰਗ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਕਪੜਾ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਸੀ। ਆਪਣੀਆ ਔਰਤਾ ਸਕਰਟਾਂ ਪਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰੇ ਵੀ ਸਕਰਟਾਂ ਪਾਕੇ ਚਾਦਰ ਨਾਲ ਢੱਕ ਕੇ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਹੁੰਦੀਆਂ ਸਨ। ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਜਨਾਨੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਕੈਨੇਡਾ ਦੀਆਂ ਔਰਤਾਂ ਵਾਂਗ ਕਪੜੇ ਪਾਣੇ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਸਨ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਕੈਨੇਡਾ ਦੇ ਸਭਿਆਚਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਉਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਰਹਿਣਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਸੀ। ਗਿਆਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਦਾ 1958 ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਹ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ। ਉਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਹੋਣ ਵਾਲੀ 17 ਸਾਲ ਦੀ ਵਹੁਟੀ ਭਾਰਤ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਆਈ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਵਿਆਹ 11 ਐਵਨਿਊ ਵਾਲੇ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰੇ ਵਿਚ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ। ਵਿਆਹ ਸਮੇਂ ਵਹੁਟੀ ਨੇ ਚਿੱਟੇ ਗਾਊਂਨ ਵਾਲੀ ਡ੍ਰੈਸ ਪਾਈ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਲਾਲ ਚੁੰਨੀ ਲਈ ਸੀ। ਵਿਆਹ ਸਮੇਂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥੀ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਸਿਰਫ ਲਾਂਵਾਂ ਪੜੀਆਂ ਸਨ, ਫੇਰੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਏ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਨਾਂ ਹੀ ਕੋਈ ਫੋਟੋ ਖਿੱਚੀ ਗਈ ਸੀ। ਬਹੁਤ ਹੀ ਸਾਦਾ ਵਿਆਹ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ। ਵਿਆਹ ਦੀ ਆਪਣੀ 25ਵੀਂ ਸਾਲ ਗਿਰਾਹ ਉਤੇ ਉਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰੇ ਵਿਚ ਅਖੰਡ ਪਾਠ ਕਰਵਾਇਆ ਅਤੇ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰੇ ਦੀ ਕਮੇਟੀ ਨੇ ਉਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਚਾਂਦੀ ਦੀ ਟਰੇਅ ਦਿਤੀ ਸੀ।
1973 ਵਿਚ ਗਿਆਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਦਾ ਸਾਰਾ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਭਾਰਤ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ।
