Memorial

William Houtsy via RRN, Feb 16, 2015: "This memorial pole was carved by Daniel Houstie, aka chief Qvumuqvaya. Dan was a well known carver and did many famous pieces, including this one. Dan Houstie was the younger brother of Tom Housty, and the first missionaries spelled their names differently. At the site where this pole sits, is a grave marker for Dan Houstie's wife and several children. This pole was put up in their memory. Some people call the pole 'old sam,' because there is a grave marker with the name 'old sam' on it, which is near the pole, but it was put up for Dan's family. The eagle represents his family crest, the same crest used by his brother Tom's family as well, and the human figure represents his deceased family.
