These scenes of food processing were initiated in order to record some of the traditional practices of the Gitxsan people and to fill some of the gaps left by earlier anthropologist and cultural observers. Description: Fireweed in foreground, smokehouse in background. Fireweed is a crest of the Gitxsan. Fireweed is also used to lay the raw fish on for processing. These scenes of food processing were initiated in order to fill some of the gaps left by earlier anthropologist and cultural observers among the Gitxsan. The Book Builders of 'Ksan also produced a volume on these collecting and processing practices titled Gathering what the Great Nature provided: food traditions of the Gitksan, by the people of 'Ksan.
