Description: Remains of a mortuary pole at the village site. Kaisun is a village on the west coast of Moresby Island. It is located at the east end of Inskip Channel, due south of Cha'atl village, with which it has close ties.

Description: A mortuary box front featuring grizzly bear chest from a house at Cumshewa.

Description: A frontal pole was erected in front of the gable-roofed structure, and was later purchased by C. F. (Charles Frederick) Newcombe, 1851-1924 for the American Museum of Natural History in New York. At the top of the pole is the killer whale, which is symbolic of people who have drowned, and below, the supernatural snag, which was credited with the power to upset canoes.

Description: A mortuary house with a halibut frontal pole. The frontal pole is interesting for its use of a single crest figure that uses the flat carved slab style, referred to as having been an earlier style of frontal pole.

Description: An unusual style of single mortuary post that supported a cap of wood in imitation of conical woven hats. A similar mortuary stood at Kayang village nearby. The sealed compartment which held the human remains has been opened and the contents have been removed.

Description: Detail of a mortuary pole surmounted by a plaque in front of the coffin chamber. The plaque is embellished with a thunderbird with a large recurved beak surrounded by a moon symbol.

Description: This mortuary pole was raised for Skedans, head chief of Skedans village. On the plaque was a moon with a Thunderbird face, and on the pole is a Grizzly Bear at the bottom and a Mountain Goat above. All of these were crests of Skedans. In this photo, the pole is being removed from Skidegate, and is being taken to Stanley Park, Vancouver, BC.
