Ancient Rainforests Under Siege!/ Then/ In 1890, the vast majority of Vancouver Island was forested with old growth predominant. Only a small percentage (in alpine areas, swampland, etc.) was not forested. the island was abundantly rich in fish and other wildlife./ Now/ In 1990, few significant areas of old growth forest remain and only a few watersheds are unlogged. This view shows mainly primary unlogged watersheds over 5000 hectares, but not small and/or fragmented watersheds./ RALLY Monday 23rd September, 4:30 P.M. onwards Legislative Lawns, Victoria Parliament Buildings./ The Carmanah, Walbran, Logan, Cullite and Sandstone Valleys are the last remaining unroaded 3% wilderness on Southern Vancouver Island./ The Multinationals Fletcher Challenge and Macmillan Bloedel are currently roadbuilding and cutting in the watersheds of the Walbran, Logan, and Cullite Valleys. Mills are being closed, destroying jobs and families. The time has come for a solution, not just promises. Logging the remaining 3% of old growth rainforest on Southern Vancouver Island, Clayoquot Sound, the Brooks Wilderness Area, Tahsish-Kwois or Tsitika/Robson Blight is no solution. As you can see from the maps above, these areas constitute the last intact wilderness areas on Vancouver Island and all are directly threatened by logging. The conservation movement is being used as a scapegoat by the corporations. mechanization, whole log exports, and corporate control of the tenure system are costing jobs. Meanwhile, clearcutting to the edge of rivers, creeks and lakes, on steep hillsides, and other unsound practices, are destroying the integrity of fisheries, wildlife and forests on Vancouver Island./ Come and show your support at this rally!
