Description

APEC at UBC.../ Invited/ General Suharto -- President of Indonesia. Came to power in a bloody coup in which, according to Amnesty International, between 500,000 to 1 million people were killed in mass killings encouraged, organized and carried out by the Indonesian army. Suharto is the world's senior dictator, presiding over corrupt government which is responsible "for human rights violations on a staggering scale." He ordered the illegal invasion of East Timor in 1975 where up to one-third of the indigenous population has been killed -- one of the worst genocides per capita since the Holocaust. Suharto will be an honoured guest at UBC this November as part of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leader's Summit on November 25th. The RCMP has already declared APEC the largest security operation in its history. Snipers and riot police will be at UBC, all to protect one of the worst mass murderers of this century./ NOT on the guest list/ Yeni Damayanti -- One of 21 students sentenced to six months' imprisonment for "insulting" the President./ Xanan Gusmao -- Timorese resistance leader. In prison since 1993. Nelson Mandela has called for his immediate release./ Marsinah -- A 25 year old factory worker who was tortured, raped and killed in 1993. She was a trade union activist./ Bonar Tigor Naipospos -- A student sentenced to eight-and-a-half years for possessing and distributing literature said to contain "communist" ideas./ Nuku Soleiman -- A student and human rights activist jailed for five years for "insulting" the President. He demanded that Suharto take responsibility for past human rights abuses./ Pramoedya Ananta Toer -- Indonesia's leading novelist. Imprisoned for 14 years after Suharto's coup. All his books are banned./ 251-9914 * APEC Alert * alert@netinfo.uba.ca ... grassroots action to oppose APEC at UBC ...
