Music: New Musica Spring

MUSIC NEW MUSICA SPRING/ MARCH 26 ELECTRIC SLAM Dynamic duo from Seattle, internationally renowned trombonist, Stuart Dempster, and the playfully eclectic-composer-performer-poet, David Mahler. Dempster will perform works which he commissioned, Sequenza V by Luciano Berio and General Speech by Robert Erickson. Both are theatre pieces, the Erickson take-off on General Douglas MacArthur. Mahler is known to Vancouver audiences from his unique performance at the WF New Wilderness Festival 1980. He will present two tape pieces Speech with Interpreter and Singing in the Style of the Voice of the Poet./ APRIL 2 RUDOLF KOMOROUS - ANATOMY OF MELANCHOLY Rudolf Komorous of Victoria is one of Canada's most intriguing composers. The Anatomy of Melancholy, a wonderful collage of different styles and qualities of music, has been performed throughout Europe and Canada. The composition consists of a series of pre-recorded tapes which are mixed together freely in performance by the tape jockey - in this case Owen Underhill, a composer-conductor now teaching at Simon Fraser University in the Centre for the Arts./ APRIL 16 BARTLETT AND FRIENDS Martin Bartlett, a Vancouver native now residing and teaching in Victoria, is at the forefront of the experimental field of live electronics and micro-computer real-time interaction. He brings to his work a profound interest in world music, most particularly shadow-plays of Asia. He is returning from Toronto, where his most recent performance piece was performed in the Canadian Electronic Music Festival at the Music Gallery./ APRIL 17 DAVID KEANE - INFINITON New Musica presents a world premiere of this computer generated slide and electronic music installation. The audience will have the opportunity of interacting with the work. David Keane is one of Canada's most active and successful composers of electronic music. His compositions may be heard on his album Lyra, Music Gallery Editions./ APRIL 30 LIVING MUSIC BY THE NEW MUSICA ENSEMBLE Acoustic exploration of the live music underground. New compositions by some of the finest contemporary composers performed by Vancouver musicians. Cutting through style/genre barriers to present the new and unheard. This concert will present works by Canadian composers L.C. Smith, S. Parkinson and premieres of O. Underhill and P. Carpenter./ MAY 7 SERGIO BARROSO. JESSE READ Cuban composer, Sergio Barroso with bassoonist, Jesse Read performing music for piano, bassoon and tape.
