Scope and contents
The Alan B. Beddoe fonds consists of manuscripts, including administrative files, correspondence, and working papers for OUR UNKNOWN HERITAGE; files relating to work on the Books of Remembrance; files on heraldry; sketches; clippings; personal and financial records; correspondence and subject files; and publications and printed material, mostly relating to heraldry. The "Books of Remembrance" files include files titled Finances (1942) and Correspondence (1931-1947) for the World War One volume, and files titled Contracts (1947-1957), Finances (1947-1958), and Correspondence (1949-1971), for the World War Two volume. The extent and nature of publishing-related material has not been determined.

Biographical sketch
Alan Beddoe was born in Ottawa in 1893, and educated at the Model School and Ashbury College. He was taken prisoner while serving in World War One, and sent to Geneva, where he eventually studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. Beddoe established the first commercial art studio specializing in display and exhibition art in Ottawa, in 1925; it was responsible for many government exhibitions. Beddoe supervised the illumination of the Canadian Books of Remembrance for both World Wars, and in 1957 was appointed Heraldic Advisor to the Royal Canadian Navy, for whom he designed many ship emblems. He wrote a book on heraldry in Canada, OUR UNKNOWN HERITAGE, which was published posthumously as BEDDOE'S CANADIAN HERALDRY (Mika Publishing Co., 1981), and was involved in the preliminary study for a new Canadian flag. Beddoe died in 1975.
