The G.H. Clarke Papers consist of extensive files of incoming and outgoing correspondence as well as manuscripts, published material, reviews, speeches, autograph collection, personal and subject files, and files relating to organizations and institutions to which Clarke belonged. His publishing-related correspondents include the Macmillan Company of Canada, The Radisson Society of Canada Limited, Ryerson Press, and Thomas Nelson and Sons.

Biographical sketch
George Herbert Clarke was born in England in 1873 and came to Canada at the age of eight. He earned his B.A. and M.A. in English from McMaster University and went on to receive honorary degrees from McMaster, Bishop's, and Queen's Universities.** At the turn of the century, Clarke worked as an editor in Chicago, then as a Professor of English at Mercier University in Georgia. He went on to teach at the University of Tennessee, the University of Virginia, Cornell University, and Queen's University. From 1920-1925 he edited the SEWANEE REVIEW and was head of the Department of English at Queen's until 1943. He also served on the editorial committee of the Queen's Quarterly and was Editor-in-Chief from 1944-1953. Clarke died in 1953.
