Scope and contents
The John Meisel Papers consist of correspondence and subject files, research notes, writings, financial records, clippings, and records relating to Queen's University, political parties, and various organizations and associations. There are separate series relating to the Royal Commission on Bilingualism and Biculturalism, the International Political Science Association, the INTERNATIONAL POLITICAL SCIENCE REVIEW, and the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission. The bulk of the publishing-related materials appear to be located in Part 1B, COLL. 1088.1 which consists of a large volume of correspondence. There is correspondence with the University of Toronto Press and with other publishers of his books.

Biographical sketch
John Meisel was born in Vienna in 1923 and immigrated to Canada with his family in 1942. He earned his BA (1945) and MA (1950) from the University of Toronto, and his PhD (1959) from the London School of Economics. His thesis was subsequently published by the University of Toronto Press as THE CANADIAN GENERAL ELECTION OF 1957. Meisel taught Political Science for many years at Queen's University. He has also been a frequent commentator and panelist on both the French and English CBC networks, president of the Social Sciences Research Council of Canada, the first English-speaking co-editor of THE CANADIAN JOURNAL OF POLITICAL SCIENCE, editor of THE INTERNATIONAL POLITICAL SCIENCE REVIEW, and the founding editor of the series CANADIAN STUDIES IN THE STRUCTURE OF POWER.** John Meisel has been associated with royal commissions, task forces, and inquiries on bilingualism, biculturalism, national unity, the status of women, and broadcasting. He has also chaired the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Council.
