Biographical sketch
Madge Macbeth was born Madge Lyons in the United States in 1878, and educated at Hellmuth College, London, Ontario. She married Charles Macbeth in 1901, after a brief career as a musician and vaudeville actress, and moved to Ottawa. Macbeth began writing a few years later, as a young widow. Her first novel, THE WINNING GAME, was published in 1910, and her articles appeared in publications such as SATURDAY NIGHT, MACLEANS, the Ottawa CITIZEN, Winnipeg FREE PRESS, and the Toronto STAR WEEKLY.** Macbeth's published titles include THE LAND OF AFTERNOON: A SATIRE (Ottawa, Graphic Publishers, 1924), published under the pseudonym Gilbert Knox, THE LONG DAY: REMINISCENCES OF THE YUKON (Graphic Press, 1926), under the pseudonym W.S. Dill, THE GREAT FRIGHT: ONESIPHORE, OUR NEIGHBOUR (Montreal and New York, L. Carrier & Co., 1929), and OVER MY SHOULDER (Ryerson, 1953). She was, at various times, president of the Ottawa Drama League, the Ottawa Women's Press Club, and the Canadian Authors' Association.
