Biographical sketch
Mary S. Edgar was born in 1889, in Sundridge, Ontario. She studied at Havergal Ladies College, Toronto, the University of Chicago, and the Teachers' College of Columbia University before graduating from the National Training School of the Young Women's Christian Association in New York City in 1915. Edgar devoted most of her life to the fields of camping and young girls' work, including work with the YWCA and Girl Guides. She did executive work as well as editorial work with some of these organizations' publications, and was the author of four books, including WOOD-FIRE AND CANDLE-LIGHT (1945) and THE CHRISTMAS WREATH OF VERSE (1967). Edgar wrote a number of one-act plays, and published many poems in periodicals throughout North America. She also wrote many well-known hymns which have been translated into numerous languages and included in many hymnals. She died in 1973.
