Jonathan Franzen is the first author in ten years to make the cover of Time magazine with the banner headline, Great American Novelist. Eleanor Wachtel spoke to him in 2001 about his bestseller, The Corrections. Now he has a new blockbuster, Freedom, which tracks the lives of an unconventional family through a time of crisis. Franzen speaks candidly with Eleanor Wachtel about the experiences that have fueled his current fiction: his "misfit" adolescent years and occasional struggle with depression his newly discovered love of bird watching, which inspires his current work as a journalist and environmental advocate and the tension between personal freedom and responsibility within American society today.
