This report oulines recommendations for China's national and local ecological security and sustainable development, including: implimenting efforts to identify adequate ecological lands and water areas to ensure sustained delivery of ecosystem at a national level and strenghten the legal framework for ecological protection (e.g., creating protected areas), integrating ecological protection red lines into a reformed land-use planning process involving areas surrounding China's urban areas, coastal, marine and watershed areas, introducing a new coordination agency, reforming the mechanism of payment for ecological services, and, reforming the existing protected areas system in China to allow more management categories and include protection of areas for primarily ecological function.
