Eagle Halibut Pole Detail

Description:

Detail of the Eagle-Halibut Pole of Laay which was carved by Oyee for Chief Laay̓ of the Eagle tribe. It stood 55 ft tall when it was erected ca. 1870. This pole originally stood at Gwinwoḵ before a flood washed it downriver around 1900. The pole then stood at Git'iks before being purchased by the UBC Museum of Anthropology in 1947, where it is currently on display.

Unidentified man with Pole of the Whale. Pole of the Whale was carved for Chief Hieek of the Eagle tribe. This pole stood 40 ft tall when it was erected ca. 1860. This pole was cut down in 1918 along with many other poles in the village during the religious revival of 1918. The Whole Being Pole, carved for Chief Gook, is in the background.
